Foundation for Jewish Studies

Dr. Lauren B. Strauss is a professor of modern Jewish history, specializing in American Jewish cultural and political history. She has taught for twenty years at universities in the Washington, D.C. area, especially at the George Washington University where she is a Visiting Scholar. She has also taught Jewish history and literature at the University of Maryland in College Park, and the American University in Washington, D.C. She holds a Ph.D. in Modern Jewish Studies from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, a Master’s degree in International Relations from Yale University, and a B.A. from Brandeis University. Dr. Strauss teaches courses on American Jewish politics, popular culture, and women’s history, and on Yiddish culture, post-Emancipation Jewish history, and modern Jewish travel. She is a frequent community lecturer and has taught many adult education classes in the D.C. area.

In 2012, Dr. Strauss was appointed Director of the Foundation for Jewish Studies, a non-profit organization that has provided Jewish adult education programs in the Washington area for over thirty years. She continues her teaching and lecturing while running the Foundation, which is based in Rockville, MD. She also served as an historical consultant for the 2004 Library of Congress exhibit “From Haven to Home,” celebrating the 350th anniversary of Jewish settlement in North America.

Dr. Strauss is co-editor of the book Mediating Modernity: Challenges and Trends in the Jewish Encounter with the Modern World (Detroit, MI: Wayne State University Press, 2008). She is also the author of several articles in anthologies, academic journals, and encyclopedias, and is currently working on her book, Painting the Town Red: Jewish Visual Artists, Yiddish Culture, and Radical Politics in Interwar New York.
