Dr. Jonathan Ray

Jonathan Ray is an Associate Professor of Jewish Studies at Georgetown University.  He holds a B.A. from Tufts University in History and Religion, and a Ph.D. in Jewish History from The Jewish Theological Seminary.  Prof. Ray specializes in medieval and early modern Jewish history, focusing on the Sephardic world.  His research explores the convivencia, or coexistence, between Christian, Muslim and Jewish societies in Iberia and throughout the broader Mediterranean region. 

He is the author of The Sephardic Frontier: The Reconquista and the Jewish Community in Medieval Iberia (Cornell University Press, 2006) and After Expulsion: 1492 and The Making of Sephardic Jewry(NYU Press, 2013), as well as several articles on Jewish history and culture.  He is a frequent lecturer on Jewish history and inter-faith relations at the Smithsonian Institution and the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute.
