Dr. Zvi Gitelman

Dr. Zvi Gitelman is a professor of comparative politics and Judaic studies at the University of Michigan. He is also a research scientist at the University's Center for Russian and East European Studies. He has written or edited numerous works on the Jews of eastern Europe, including Jewish Life After the USSR (2003) and A Century of Ambivalence: The Jews of Russia and the Soviet Union (2001).

Professor Gitelman studies ethnicity and politics, especially in former Communist countries, as well as Israeli politics, East European politics, and Jewish political thought and behavior. His most recent book is Jewish Identities in Postcommunist Russia and Ukraine: An Uncertain Ethnicity, Cambridge University Press, 2012).  Professor Gitelman’s current project is on ethnic relations in the Soviet armed forces during the war and Soviet policy regarding the Holocaust. It is based on hundreds of oral testimonies of Soviet Jewish veterans of World War Two, and on Soviet archives.
