What We Do

The Foundation for Jewish Studies was established by Rabbi Joshua O. Haberman in 1983 with a generous anonymous gift, part of which funded a survey of the D.C. community’s need for Jewish learning programs. Many of the Foundation's initial programs were pioneering efforts that have since been adopted by synagogues and other Washington-area organizations. The Foundation for Jewish Studies remains one of the few non-denominational and independently-funded organizations that provides such learning opportunities.

The Foundation's Distinguished Scholar Series program, begun in 2007, brings internationally renowned scholars to speak in the Greater Washington, D.C. area. In 2015, the program was renamed the Rabbi Joshua O. Haberman Distinguished Scholar Series. Other programs offer text study with visiting scholars, cultural events such as concerts or films with serious Jewish-related content, day trips, mini courses, and study retreats.
