New Horizons - New Challenges: Reform and Liberal Judaism in Contemporary Israel

Temple Shalom

Dates: Tuesday, June 14, 2016
Time: 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Speaker: Rabbi Dr. Yehoyada Amir

Judaism has always played a complex role in the Zionist and Israeli project. Is it a religion or a national culture?  Does it unite Israeli Jews with the Jewish people worldwide, or threaten to rupture their relationship?  Does Judaism offer a rationale for a "Jewish and democratic" social-political fabric, or grounds for an ethnocentric, separatist society?  In his lecture, Dr. Amir, an Israeli Reform rabbi and professor who teaches at the Jerusalem branch of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, will discuss the role that today’s Israeli Reform movement and the Reform rabbinate plays in answering these fundamental questions.
