Tradition and Change in Biblical Law

B'nai Shalom of Olney

Dates: Monday, November 02, 2015
Time: 10:00 am - 11:30 am
Speaker: Dr. Benjamin Sommer

The Foundation's Distinguished Scholar, Dr. Benjamin Sommer of JTS, will teach again at B'nai Shalom of Olney on Monday morning, November 2, at a text study session with B'nai Shalom's "Hazak" group.  Although this event is cosponsored by Hazak and the Foundation, all are welcome -- free of charge.  After Dr. Sommer's lecture the previous evening, those looking for more intimate text study and discussion, accompanied by bagels and coffee, are sure to enjoy this special opportunity.  No knowledge of Hebrew is required.

Professor Sommer will compare the various law codes found within the Torah and stemming from the Torah's various sources (E, D, P).  How do later law codes revise earlier ones on ritual issues, on economic issues, and on issues pertaining to the status of women?  This session will encourage participants to view the Bible as the record of debates that Jews confronted in ancient times.  It suggests that we may look to the Bible as relevant today not for dogma on a given issue but as a guide for thinking about and debating an issue; not for definite answers, but for a path towards them.
