The Book of Exodus

The Dennis and Philip Ratner Museum

Dates: Every Sunday, September 20, 2015 - June 05, 2016
Speaker: Gideon Amir

This program is made possible by the generosity of Donna and Murray Comarow.

In the Book of Exodus, the second book of the Hebrew Bible, Israel is transformed from a family into a nation. The process involves the Hebrews (or Israelites) first becoming slaves to the Egyptians, then the Israelites being redeemed by God through a series of amazing miracles, then God’s revelation at Mount Sinai where the covenant between God and the Israelites is established and the laws that are part of this covenant are spelled out. Exodus also gives detailed descriptions for the construction of the Tabernacle and with it, the establishment of the priesthood and the sacrificial system of worshipping God.

In class, we will study the book of Exodus chapter by chapter, using a range of interpretations and commentary.  Each participant should bring a bilingual Hebrew/English Bible, but knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary.

The season is divided into three sections. Participants can register for each section separately or for all three together.

There will be 26 classes in the 2015-2016  academic year.  Please note that classes will not be held on the following dates: October 11, November 15 and 29, December 20 and 27, January 3 and 17, February 14, April 24, and May 29.
