The Slow Road to Monotheism: Biblical Israel's Many Gods

Temple Shalom, Chevy Chase, MD

Dates: Monday, May 18, 2015
Time: 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Speaker: Dr. Julie Galambush

The Hebrew Bible reflects the centuries-long battle to wean Israel away from the worship of many gods. Even the Bible, however, is not strictly monotheistic. Rather, Israel's world was full of divinities, from the other gods Israel was forbidden to worship to the sons of God and divine messengers that were later understood to be "angels," rather than lower-level deities. This talk will introduce the range of deities that populated the lives of ancient Israelites, and ask why and when they finally arrived at monotheism.
