A Jewish Perspective on Thomas Jefferson

Bus trip to Monticello, in Charlottesville, VA

Dates: Sunday, October 26, 2014
Time: 8:00 am - 7:00 pm
Speaker: Multiple Speakers

Come for the first time or for a repeat visit to Jefferson's distinctive home, Monticello, led by David Epstein.

The relationship between the state and religion was deeply affected by Thomas Jefferson, first in the Statute of Virginia for Religious Freedom, later by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. The inscription that Jefferson chose for his tombstone, on the grounds at Monticello, suggests the themes that were most important to him.

Thomas Jefferson left explicit instructions regarding the monument to be erected over his grave.

The inscription below was to be on the faces of the Obelisk and not a word more.  In his words, "because by these, as testimonials that I have lived, I wish most to be remembered."

Here was buried
Thomas Jefferson
Author of the Declaration of American Independence
of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom
& Father of the University of Virginia

If time allows, there will be a bus tour of the University of Virginia which was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson as the first nonsectarian university in the United States.
