The Image of Jewish Men in American Films

JCC of Greater Washington

Dates: Wednesday, November 14, 2012
Time: 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Speaker: Rabbi Stan Levin

Rabbi Stan Levin has taught extensively in the Washington area on contemporary films, movie history, and Jewish culture.

Part 1 of 2. The second part is November 28, 2012 at 7:30 pm.

The motion picture industry in America was founded primarily by European Jewish salesmen who were able to tap into the American ethos and create an empire. After nearly 100 years, the movies continue to attract Jewish writers, directors, and producers who rarely put Jewish characters on screen. When they do, they are making a statement - but what kind of statement? What do the movies say about Jewish men and women? We will explore movies from The Jazz Singer to A Serious Man, and find out what image Hollywood conveys about Jews.
